Biography

I am a composer based in the Scottish Highlands. I am interested in exploring and encapsulating many of the fundamental qualities of the music I have enjoyed from my earliest years until now; music with high energy, intensity, colour, drive, groove and the unexpected.

Complementing and in contrast to this, my music has a clear deconstructive element. Born from my interest and study of architecture and interior spaces, comes ideas of how spaces are lit and how they flow, expand and retract, influencing how we feel as we move through them.

This idea of 'spaces' and their inherent atmosphere and affecting impact also assists me in exploring a psychological and emotional representation of the differing struggles and joys of day to day life.

With regard to outdoor spaces, it would be impossible to ignore the influence of my geographical setting.

I studied music at Glasgow University and then undertook postgraduate studies at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, earning a Master’s degree in Composition. I have written music for a variety of professional, amateur and student ensembles, soloists and orchestras including the Scottish Philharmonic Orchestra, Paragon, the Hebrides Ensemble, Music Lab and the Highland Chamber Orchestra.

My works have been performed at a range of festivals and venues and as well as composing I have produced many orchestrations, reductions and arrangements for various groups, duos and individuals.

My time is divided between composing, teaching and performing, having also studied the classical guitar and piano.
